Story of A Hero

Every Memorial Day we pay homage to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. While many of these heroes' names are etched into history, their stories often remain untold. One such hero is Captain Samuel Sanders Jr., a Fowlerville native who was killed in action in 2006 while serving in Afghanistan.

Captain Sanders was a 1992 graduate of Fowlerville High School and went on to earn a degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served two tours in Iraq prior to his deployment to Afghanistan. During his service, he was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart.

Captain Sanders left behind a wife and two children, as well as a legacy of honor and sacrifice. His memory, along with those of other fallen heroes, is honored each year by the Fowlerville community on Memorial Day.

The Fowlerville Memorial Day parade and ceremony are among the community's most cherished traditions. Each year, hundreds of residents gather to pay their respects to the fallen and to celebrate the freedoms they fought to protect.

Why Memorial Day is Important

Memorial Day is not just a day off from work or the unofficial start of summer. It is a day to remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service to their country. It is a day to reflect on the value of freedom and the cost at which it comes.

By remembering the fallen, we honor their sacrifice and ensure that their legacy lives on. We also show support to their families who have endured great loss.

Finally, Memorial Day reminds us all of the profound debt we owe to those who have served and continue to serve our nation. Every time we exercise our freedoms, we do so because of the sacrifice of those who came before us.

Conclusion: Why We Must Remember

Memorial Day is a day to remember and reflect. It is a time to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We must never forget the price they paid to secure our freedom.

As we go about our daily lives, it is easy to take our freedoms for granted. We must remember that these freedoms came at a great cost and that they must be safeguarded for future generations.

On this Memorial Day and every day, let us honor the memory of the fallen by living our lives with gratitude, kindness, and respect for all.
