The Struggles of Gay Couples in Italy to Start a Family
Starting a family is a dream of many, but for gay couples in Italy, this dream is becoming increasingly difficult due to the government's new parenting curb. The new law, which was passed earlier this year, states that only "stable" heterosexual couples are allowed to adopt children in the country. This has left the LGBT community, who were already grappling with discrimination and limited rights, further marginalized.
The Italian LGBT community has been fighting for equal rights for years, and while they have made some progress, there is still a long way to go. The new law has come as a shock to many, especially to those who had already started the adoption process or were planning to. The government's decision has effectively snatched away their hopes and dreams of starting a family.
One such couple is Luca and Matteo (last names withheld for privacy reasons), who have been together for seven years and had been planning to adopt a child for over a year. "We had already met with adoption agencies and were in the process of selecting a child when the law was passed," says Matteo, adding, "Now, we don't know what to do. We are heartbroken, and the government doesn't seem to care."
Luca and Matteo's story is not unique. There are many LGBT couples in Italy who are facing similar challenges and are struggling to come to terms with the government's decision.
