It was the first day of my LLM program at a prestigious law school, and I was excited to embark on a new academic journey. As I settled into my seat, the professor began discussing the university affairs, which had me taken aback. He spoke about the existing challenges and opportunities LLMs faced at various universities, which made me realize the unique path of these postgraduates.
LLMs, also known as Master of Laws, are those who have completed a law program and wish to specialize in a particular field. Unlike JDs, who begin their law program immediately after their undergraduate degree, LLMs come with different experiences and backgrounds. Though these students bring diversity and international perspectives to the academic community, the lack of awareness and support for them makes it difficult to thrive. It's time we discuss the LLMs' struggles and triumphs to appreciate their unique path.
The Challenges of LLMs
LLMs face various challenges, including cultural barriers, financial constraints, and unfamiliarity with the schooling system. For international students, cultural mastery can be a challenging task, and the unfamiliarity with the new environment can cause a strain on their academic performance. Additionally, for those that have come from countries with different legal systems, understanding the American laws can prove difficult resulting in lower grades.
The pandemic has shone a light on the financial pressures that LLMs go through. Scholarships are limited, and the price of tuition can add an extra layer of pressure. Without financial aid, some students cannot maximise their opportunities, resulting in a negative impact on their academic and professional paths.
Opportunities for LLMs
LLMs have a unique perspective on the law, bringing an international experience and expertise to the classroom. That diversity can lead to a synergy of knowledge and networking opportunities that one cannot achieve elsewhere. But for LLMs to harness the opportunities within universities, adequate support must be provided.
Universities must provide a space for LLM students in the student affairs department, where they can seek guidance and support from faculty and peers alike. Special programs and events catered to LLMs could also uplift and validate their unique academic journey. Law firms and other stakeholders must likewise seek out LLMs to fill open positions and provide internships and job opportunities, leveraging the international expertise as they navigate the business landscape.
I recall being lost in the crowd, trying to navigate a new environment, feeling unsure. I was an international student, and adjusting to a new culture was daunting. With my LLM program, I was the only international student in my class, and I felt like an outsider. It wasn't until a faculty member noticed my struggles and recommended reaching out to peer relations that my experience improved. By networking with other LLMs, I was able to thrive, win a moot court competition, and pave the way for other international students.
Conclusion
Now more than ever, we need to talk about LLMs' unique journey in university affairs. By understanding their struggles, we can provide opportunities to uplift and validate their experience. The benefits of having international expertise in legal education and practice are invaluable. Universities and stakeholders must recognize that potential and provide the support and programs to maximize that potential. In doing so, these communities can foster diversity and inclusivity, break down cultural barriers, and encourage new ideas and growth.
