A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a coffee shop with my friend talking about the latest tech buzz. He asked me if Apple will ever have a ChatGPT rival to compete with the likes of Alexa and Google Assistant.
I took a deep breath and explained to him why Apple is unlikely to have a ChatGPT rival anytime soon. Let me share the same with you.
Real-life examples show that Apple's virtual assistant Siri has been lagging behind its competitors when it comes to Artificial Intelligence-based conversations. Siri commonly misunderstands requests, and is often unable to initiate a conversation or provide in-depth information on a particular topic.
On the other side, Alexa and Google Assistant have shown significant improvement in their capability to understand natural language processing and maintain a conversation with the user. For instance, users can ask Alexa to give them a recipe while cooking, or ask the Google Assistant for directions while driving.
These chatbots are built with the latest Artificial Intelligence technology and are continually learning through user interactions, making the conversations more meaningful and straightforward.
Apple's current strategy is more focused on giving users the ability to control their devices through Siri, rather than making it a ChatGPT-based conversation tool. The recent release of the HomePod Mini was not integrated with Siri's artificial intelligence system, and for good reason.
Apple's ideal goal with Siri is to give a more hands-free experience to the user, which is self-evident with its AirPods product. Enabling users to manage their entire digital experience through Siri makes it a companion rather than a virtual assistant.
Conclusion
- Apple's focus with Siri seems to be more about enhancing the user's digital experience through voice control rather than AI-based conversation, where Google Assistant and Alexa both excel.
- Apple is known for its user experience and creating top-of-the-line hardware; therefore, their products are often integrated to work well together to offer an exceptional user experience. This focus on hardware is not necessarily anti-innovation, but rather a different perspective on user experience.
- While Apple may be seen as lagging behind when it comes to chatbots, the company is excellent at creating new markets and products that users readily adopt. Therefore, Apple's focus on Siri as a hands-free experience, rather than the virtual assistant, is more user-friendly and will potentially create a new customer base.
